CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey has filed a lawsuit saying a Florida company is trying to collect debts that West Virginians don’t owe.

Earlier this month, Morrisey’s office filed its complaint against Simple Recovery Solutions in Kanawha County Circuit Court. Morrisey announced the lawsuit in a news release Tuesday.

The filing says Simple Recovery Solutions tried to collect debts from at least 125 West Virginia consumers by phone and mail. Many complaints came from people who said they didn’t owe anything.

The filing says that violates the state Consumer Credit and Protection Act. It says the company operated without a business license. It claimed to offer credit card interest rate reduction services.

The filing asks a judge to prevent the company and its officers from trying to collect debts.
