RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - More school employees having sex with students close to their own age could now have a felony on their records.

The General Assembly gave its final approval Wednesday to legislation that changes the crime for people like substitute teachers, bus drivers and custodians who engage in sex or take indecent liberties with a student.

The change applies to personnel less than four years older than the victim, which had faced the most severe misdemeanor. Now they would face the lowest grade of felony. Bill supporters say a felony could make it more difficult for the employee to find work at another school.

The House agreed to Senate changes that extended the indecent liberties change to private and charter school personnel.

The bill next goes to Gov. Pat McCrory’s desk.
