ANTIOCH, Calif. (AP) - Contra Costa County officials say passengers in a car that landed in deep, fast-flowing waters of an Antioch canal are now safe.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1GG9neM ) Fire Marshal Robert Marshall says the car landed in the canal Wednesday afternoon. He says it was unclear how many people were in the vehicle when it landed in the water.

Fire crews arrived at the scene and found all occupants had made it to safety, except for one person who was still on top of the vehicle.

Media reports indicated that bystanders jumped into the water and broke the car windows to pull the passengers out.

Marshall says the canal is located close to the road where the vehicle entered the water.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.
