FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a husband and wife banned from pet ownership for five years following an animal neglect conviction have been arrested for having animals at their Long Island home.

Officials said the couple had been convicted of animal neglect in 2012. A judge had signed court orders forbidding them to own or take care of any animals for five years.

Authorities said a probation officer who visited the couple’s home last week saw a dog through a window and heard barking.

Officials executed a search warrant on Thursday, and found a dog, a cockatoo and a tarantula. A tenant in the basement had two dogs.

The couple had been convicted in connection to their 2-year-old Great Dane, which was found extremely emaciated in 2010, and subsequently died.
