ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (AP) - Elizabeth City will be designated as an official Coast Guard City.
A Coast Guard statement said a ceremony will be held at Friday afternoon at the Museum of the Albemarle’s front lawn. Adm. Coast Guard commandant Paul Zukunft will preside.
Officials say Elizabeth City was denied the designation in 2005, but was encouraged to apply again. A former Coast Guard spokesman says several previously chosen towns had sent in multiple applications before they were awarded the title.
The designation is reserved for cities that have made special efforts to acknowledge the work of the Coast Guard members who are assigned to their area and have extended considerations to the Coast Guard and their dependents.
