NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A former mayor of Norfolk has died.

The city issued a statement Wednesday saying that Irvin B. Hill passed away at the age of 87.

Hill served on the Norfolk City Council from 1972 to 1976. During that time, he served as mayor from 1974 to 1976.

Current Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim says Hill was a distinguished, loved former mayor who was also a cheerleader for the city. He was frequently referred to as the “People’s Mayor” for his warm welcome to those he met.

In 2000, Hill received the Distinguished Service Medal as Norfolk’s First Citizen.
