OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma City police are investigating how a man died in their custody after being arrested for allegedly breaking into vehicles.

Capt. Paco Balderrama says the man was pronounced dead at a local hospital Wednesday evening. His name has not been released.

Balderrama says police responded to a call of a man breaking into vehicles near a motorcycle trail. Balderrama said when police arrived, the man was being subdued by people who had bound him with a tow rope.

The man was handcuffed by officers who then noticed he wasn’t breathing. Balderrama said the handcuffs were removed and an ambulance was called, bu the man was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Balderrama said officers Heather Bennett and William Robison were placed on paid administrative leave while the case is investigated.
