REIDSVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Officials say a man convicted of shooting of a Cobb police officer has been found dead while in custody at the Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

A spokeswoman for the Georgia Department of Corrections told the Marietta Daily Journal (https://bit.ly/1d13i0r) 36-year-old James Albert Phillips died Monday. She said Phillips’ death is under investigation and the cause of death could not be released.

Phillips was sentenced to 105 years in prison without the possibility of parole, as well as a $1 million fine, after he was found guilty of shooting Cobb Police Officer Charles Vill on Feb. 4, 2014. Authorities say Phillips shot Vill five times during a traffic stop.

Vill survived and received the Blue Star award, which is given to an officer severely wounded in the line of duty.
