WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) - A 26-year-old man who escaped away from Maui Community Correctional Center is back in custody.

Inmate Leif Valdez, also known as Lucas Rauh, went missing between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Hawaii Department of Public Safety says the method by which he escaped is under investigation.

The department says he had been serving a 15-day sentence for misdemeanor theft in a minimum security dorm on the perimeter of the correctional center.

His sentence was scheduled to end June 3.
