NEW ORLEANS (AP) - An Orleans Parish judge sent the jury in an attempted murder and gun possession trial home after the defendant showed up in court with a 2-inch wound in his back. His attorney told the court Wednesday that 25-year-old Timothy Jones, of Memphis, Tennessee, was attacked inside Orleans Parish Prison.

The New Orleans Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1d1ItSy) Jones spent Tuesday night in the hospital.

After viewing medical reports, Judge Karen Herman postponed the trial until June 29. The jury was selected on Tuesday, but Herman had yet to swear it in, avoiding the need for a mistrial.

Authorities say Jones did not revealed the identity of his attacker. But deputies say they recovered two shanks after separating Jones and another inmate.
