FONDA, N.Y. (AP) - A Mohawk Valley farmer has been sentenced to 40 years in state prison for sexually abusing six Amish boys over several years.

A Montgomery County Court jury in April convicted 48-year-old Robert Madsen of St. Johnsville of 37 of 40 counts against him, including two counts of predatory sexual assault. He was sentenced Wednesday to two consecutive 20-year terms.

Prosecutors say Madsen, who isn’t Amish, abused six boys from two Amish families over the course of several years. The victims were between 12 and 16.

Police began their investigation early last year when a then-20-year-old Amish man said he had been sexually abused by Madsen when younger.

Madsen’s attorney, Steven Coffey, said he plans to appeal the verdict.
