WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) - Sam O’Dell steadied himself after a front-nine meltdown Thursday and will take a five-stroke lead into the final round of the West Virginia Amateur at The Greenbrier resort.

O’Dell shot a 5-over-par 77 and is at 1 under for the tournament. Davey Jude of Kermit and Christian Casingal of Charleston are both at 4 over. Jude shot 74 and Casingal shot 75 Thursday.

O’Dell made triple-bogey on the first hole on the Greenbrier Course. The Hurricane dentist had three other bogeys on the front nine and his lead over Vienna’s Alan Cooke shrank from six shots to two midway through the round. But O’Dell had only one bogey the rest of the day.

Cooke also shot 77 and slipped into a tie with Wheeling’s Thadd Obecny at 5 over.
