MANCHAC, La. (AP) - State and local officials are working on transforming the area around Manchac into a greenway for fishing, biking, hiking and nature watching.

The Daily Star reports (https://bit.ly/1FiyVKC ) a steering committee has met with officials from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, as well as the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the mayors of Hammond and Ponchatoula.

Organizer Frank Neelis says the state will do a study for a bicycle causeway, so organizers can determine who owns the southeastern Louisiana property.

Neelis says the causeway would allow cyclists to get off of the busy highways and instead take a different route. A hiking trail is also planned.

Once property clearance is secured, Ponchatoula mayor Bob Zabbia says he will host meetings for officials to agree on the next steps.
