CENTRAL CITY, La. (AP) - New Orleans police say a 5-year-old boy is in a medically-induced coma with injuries investigators say indicate long-term abuse.

Nola.com/The Times-Picayune (https://bit.ly/1Fc7jpB) reports the boy was hospitalized Monday after he had an apparent seizure at his home in Central City. Hospital personnel called NOPD child abuse detectives after detailing numerous severe injuries, including head and abdominal trauma, bite and burn marks, widespread bruising and noting the child was missing several teeth and fingernails.

The boy’s mother, 37-year-old Heather Simpson, and her boyfriend, 34-year-old Cristian DeGregory, were booked Tuesday with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.

Authorities say the boy and his 3-year-old sister have been placed into state custody through the Department of Children and Family Services.

Simpson and DeGregory are scheduled for a bond hearing Thursday.
