FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A registered sex offender who did contract work at Fayetteville’s Freedom Christian Academy has been charged with violating sex offender registry guidelines.

Multiple media outlets report 50-year-old Paul Conner of Fayetteville was charged Thursday with three counts of violating the Sex Offender Act and one count of conspiracy.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s office says the school’s principal, Joan Dayton, has not been charged, but is named in Conner’s arrest warrant as a co-conspirator.

Dayton has taken a leave of absence Friday amid claims that she allowed Conner to work at the school.

Conner pleaded guilty in Robeson County in 2001 to two sex-related offenses involving an 8-year-old girl.

Conner is expected to make his first court appearance Friday. It was not immediately clear if Conner has hired an attorney.
