ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (AP) - A veteran police dog has retired from the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office.

A yellow Labrador retriever named Blitz joined the sheriff’s office in 2008. Cpl. Matt Bartolotta has been her handler and partner ever since.

Blitz was honored at a retirement ceremony in Rock Springs last week.

The sheriff’s office says Blitz was involved in many drug seizures over the years. Among her best cases was detecting 14 pounds of marijuana after a traffic stop in January 2011.

Blitz received stem cell therapy in 2012 to treat her for pain from a torn cruciate ligament and arthritis. The procedure eased her pain and extended her service by three years.

Sgt. John Grossnickle of the sheriff’s office says drug detection dogs continue to be an important tool for law enforcement.
