PORT SULPHUR, La. (AP) - Authorities have identified a body with a skull tattoo found floating in the Mississippi River two weeks ago as a 27-year-old man from Houma.
Multiple news outlets report Anthony Ferguson’s body was recovered after a lengthy effort May 12 near Port Sulphur. Ferguson’s identity had eluded authorities for weeks because the corpse was found in a state of extreme decomposition.
The Louisiana State Police Crime Lab was able to use DNA to positively identify Ferguson May 27.
Ferguson’s car was found abandoned on March 11. A State Police spokeswoman says foul play was not suspected in his death.
Ferguson was a former Marine convicted of aggravated sexual assault and pornography involving a minor in 2010. He was released in 2013.
