YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio (AP) - A 92-year-old World War II veteran from Ohio has received his high school diploma after dropping out at the age of 17 to fight in the war.

Charles Benning, of Springfield, wore a cap and gown Thursday as he was escorted by his grandson Sean Jenkins to receive an honorary diploma from Yellow Springs High School.

Jenkins says his grandfather regrets most never graduating from high school. That’s why he called the school and explained to them his grandfather’s situation.

School administrators and the county’s Board of Education found he met the graduation requirements and agreed to give him the diploma.

Benning served in the Army in a unit of black soldiers. He was a platoon sergeant in an ambulance company that ferried injured soldiers from various battlefields, including Normandy.
