ROGERS, Ark. (AP) - Benton County officials are set to decide whether to repair a historic bridge and keep it open for traffic.
The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1zqdyJZ ) the county Transportation Committee on Monday will consider the fate of the War Eagle Bridge, which residents have rallied to support.
The state Highway and Transportation Department has identified several structural defects in the bridge that was built in 1908. County officials are weighing the cost of rehabilitating, maintaining and replacing it.
More than 100 residents attended a February meeting to express support for keeping the historic bridge open.
Chairman of the county Finance Committee Tom Allen says the county has to weigh the historic significance of the structure against safety and cost.
