DETROIT (AP) - The head of the Detroit branch of the NAACP is demanding that elected leaders in Washington fix the problem of jobs, education and training in black communities.
The Rev. Wendell Anthony spoke Sunday ahead of a speech by Vice President Joe Biden at a fundraiser in Detroit. He referred to the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, Tamir Rice in Cleveland, and Freddie Gray in Baltimore, all involving police.
Anthony says many people aren’t acknowledging a “serious issue in our nation” between blacks and police.
The NAACP is the nation’s oldest civil rights group. The 60th annual dinner, held at Cobo Center, is the largest fundraiser for the Detroit branch.
