NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. (AP) - North Topsail Beach officials say beach nourishment will continue even though the original deadline for the project on the south end of town has come and gone.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported (https://bit.ly/1JJUzxB) the project originally was supposed to be finished by April 30. But bad weather and equipment problems slowed down the project.

Town Manager Stuart Turille says the consulting engineers have indicated the town now is permitted to place sand on the beach until May 10. The project began Dec. 18, 2014.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has given the town the OK to continue work through June 30, with conditions. The town is awaiting decisions from National Marine Fisheries Service and the state Division of Coastal Management on whether the work can continue until then.
