PENN YAN, N.Y. (AP) - The Yates County Sheriff’s Office says the pilot of a single-engine Cessna has died after crashing shortly after takeoff from the Penn Yan airport.

Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike says it’s not clear whether the accident was caused by a medical event or an airplane control failure. He said the plane was taking off southbound on the main runway Sunday morning when it veered off to the east and hit the ground with its nose propeller, then spun around and came to rest against the airport fence and trees.

The pilot was found dead in the plane, still strapped into his seat. His name hasn’t been released yet.

Spike said the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
