RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Three students from Northern Virginia are being recognized nationally for achievements in academics or the arts.

Malik S. Jabati, Kevin J. Broom II and Anna V. Venetianer have been named U.S. Presidential Scholars. They are among 141 high school seniors who are part of the program’s 51st class.

Broom and Venetianer are both students at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology in Alexandria. Jabati is from Alexandria and is a student at Groton School in Groton, Massachusetts.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the honorees on Monday in a news release.

The program has honored almost 7,000 of the nation’s top-performing students since it was created in 1964.

Each student will receive a Presidential Scholar Medallion at a ceremony on June 21.
