MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) - The Medford City Council plans to go after blighted buildings, with new rules that could force boarded-up structures to be torn down more quickly.

The Mail Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1OVovdE ) the council has agreed to work on a new ordinance that would provide deadlines for the property owners to demolish or remodel the buildings.

The rules would also give officials leeway in hardship cases.

Currently, the city has no limit on how long a building can be boarded up.

The city has identified 55 properties as “blighted.” City officials say some of the buildings have been boarded up for decades. Most of these properties are bank-owned.

The city is also exploring using its own funds or federal dollars to invest in repairs or demolition of some problem properties.
