DOVER, Del. (AP) - Gov. Jack Markell says state officials are setting a goal of ensuring that no military veteran in Delaware is homeless.

Markell said Monday that Delaware is signing on as state to a nationwide challenge to U.S. mayors to end veteran homelessness this year.

Officials say 100 veterans in Delaware are homeless on any given night, and that some 280 will experience homelessness this year.

A working group including state and federal agencies, nonprofit providers and veterans agencies has developed a plan to address Delaware’s homeless veterans.

The plan includes identifying veterans who are homeless or at high risk of homelessness, and improving connections and coordination between veteran-specific and mainstream resources for the homeless. It also includes creating 20 rental assistance vouchers dedicated to veterans through the State Rental Assistance Program.
