DOVER, Del. (AP) - Gov. Jack Markell is nominating the deputy director of Delaware’s economic development office to succeed retiring director Alan Levin.

Markell said Monday that he has chosen Bernice Whaley as Levin’s replacement. Levin is resigning in June to join a Sussex County-based restaurant and hospitality group.

Whaley joined Levin at DEDO in 2009 after working for more than two decades at Happy Harry’s, a drugstore chain that was founded by Levin’s father and acquired by the Walgreen Company in 2006.

Whaley says that if she’s confirmed by the state Senate, she will focus on supporting the growth and development of small businesses in Delaware.

Markell also is nominating Secretary of State Jeff Bullock to succeed Levin as chair of the Diamond State Port Corporation, where Bullock currently serves as vice chair.
