BEALS, Maine (AP) - Maine officials are asking the public about the potential impacts of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredging project on the fishing industry in Downeast Maine.

The corps has submitted a project to dredge approximately 100,000 cubic yards of clay material from an 18.5-acre area within Beals Harbor. It also proposes a smaller maintenance dredging project in Pig Island Gut. A private contractor would perform the work.

A public hearing on the dredging is scheduled for May 14 at Beals Elementary School. Beals is an island town of about 500 people opposite Jonesport.

Officials say the project would start in October and be finished by the end of March 2016. Comments on the project are due to the state Department of Marine Resources by May 28.
