MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) - A Mason City man must serve at least 17 years in prison after being sentenced in the hit-and-run death of a motorcyclist last November.
The Globe Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1FLdGoC ) a judge Monday sentenced 47-year-old Victor Rivera to 25 years after he earlier pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle. He also received five years for failure to stop in the event of an accident resulting in death.
He must serve 70 percent of the 25 year term, or 17½ years, before being eligible for parole.
Rivera was driving a vehicle that struck and killed a motorcycle operated by Jefferson Davis. A motorcycle passenger was injured.
Rivera left but was apprehended that night.
Joslyn Davis, one of Davis’ five children, told Rivera he’d taken away “a father, a son and a friend.”
