COLLINS, Miss. (AP) - Covington County law enforcement officials have opened a new jail facility to help with overcrowding and give officers additional space to work.

WDAM-TV (https://bit.ly/1AzpZ1n ) reports county officials had a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday at the complex on Highway 84, west of Collins. The $3.5 million complex has 100 beds, increased office space and holding areas set aside for both male and female inmates. The complex will replace a decades-old county jail, located downtown.

Covington County Sheriff Stann Smith says work needs to be done for a 30-bed minimum security wing of the jail and the county will be hiring about 15 new law enforcement officers to work.
