HURON, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say they’re investigating what they believe was an intentional fire near a northern Ohio pier where a controlled burn was planned for the next day.

The Sandusky Register reports (https://bit.ly/1R5loyt ) firefighters intended to use the space adjacent to the Huron North Main Pier for a controlled burn Monday. But a fire at the site broke out just before 3:30 p.m. Sunday, sending thick black smoke billowing in the air near the pier.

Firefighters kept people on the pier away from the blaze for about 90 minutes until the flames died down.

Huron fire Capt. Kurt Schafer says crews have a high suspicion someone started the flames intentionally. Firefighters let the fire burn because there was no road to access it.

No injuries were reported.
