PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island U.S. Sen. Jack Reed is praising the man expected to be President Obama’s choice as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The Associated Press reported Monday night that Obama’s nomination of Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford Jr. is expected to be announced Tuesday.

Reed is the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. He said Monday night he has come to “greatly value Gen. Dunford’s counsel and insight.”

Reed, an Army veteran, said he particularly appreciates Dunford’s concern “for our men and women in uniform under his command.”

Dunford is a Boston native and holds master’s degrees in government from Georgetown University and international relations from Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

Dunford is expected to be easily confirmed by the Senate.
