LONG BEACH, Wash. (AP) - The Washington State Patrol says a southwest Washington police officer was taken to a hospital as a precaution after his patrol vehicle struck a herd of elk on U.S. Highway 101.

KBKW says the State Patrol report didn’t indicate how many elk might have been hurt in the crash at about 1:30 a.m. Monday. The animals left the crash site.

The 60-year-old Long Beach officer’s police cruiser was towed away.
