MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont House and Senate are at odds over several tax proposals as the Legislature enters what are expected to be its final two weeks.
The House is backing a surcharge on the state property transfer tax as a way to help pay for cleaning up Lake Champlain and other waters.
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Tim Ashe says he thinks new property buyers shouldn’t bear so much of the burden of pollution problems that have been decades in the making.
There also are differences over what new items should be added to those hit with Vermont’s 6 percent sales tax. Both the House and Senate want to tax soda. A House proposal adds candy to items that are taxed, while the Senate does not.
