WATERBURY, Vt. (AP) - One shot was all one pre-teen hunter needed to reach the maximum number of turkeys allowed to be killed during Vermont’s spring gobbler season.
The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/1Jniu2o ) 11-year-old Kayla Yalicki was out with family and friends for her first hunt of the season. Kayla’s father, Mike, says the birds came across an open field where Kayla was waiting with her 20-gauge shotgun.
The Waterbury resident paused until the two turkeys’ heads came together before firing the lone shot that killed them both.
Vermont’s spring gobbler season opened Friday. Hunters are allowed to harvest two bearded birds during the season that lasts until the end of May.
Mike Yalicki says he is impressed by his daughter’s feat, which he characterized as “a mix of luck and hard work.”
