GREAT FALLS, Mont. (AP) - A 33-year-old Box Elder man has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison after being convicted of assaulting, raping and trying to kill his girlfriend by strangling her.

After a three-day trial in January, a jury convicted Dallas Lawrence of two rapes, two strangulations, two assaults with intent to commit murder and assault with a dangerous weapon.

U.S. District Judge Brian Morris sentenced Lawrence on Monday. There is no parole in the federal system.

Prosecutors alleged Lawrence stabbed his girlfriend in the leg in September 2013 and that he strangled her with a humidifier cord in March 2014 and with his hands in May 2014, in both cases threatening to kill her. She said she blacked out in May 2014.
