CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) - The Cedar Falls City Council has approved an ordinance that will require inspections of some homes to ensure they’re not illegally dumping stormwater into the city’s sanitary sewage system.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1F3Gl9H ) that the council voted Monday night on the measure, which is aimed at homes built after 1970. Water treatment facility manager Lyle Krueger estimates that there about 4,000 homes with improper connections and that they annually dump between 16 million and 48 million gallons of groundwater into the sanitary sewer system, which costs money for the city to treat.

The sanitary sewer can overflow into basements when stormwater in the system overwhelms its capacity.

Property owners with illegal connections will be given 90 days to correct the problem.
