SIDNEY, Ill. (AP) - Officials in the central Illinois village of Sidney say they’re worried thousands of gallons of diesel fuel that spilled into a creek could threaten fish.

Sidney Village President Charles White tells the (Champaign) News-Gazette (https://bit.ly/1EUESjZ ) that he hasn’t seen any dead fish yet, but he’s concerned. Sidney Fire Chief Earl Bennett says about 2,000 gallons of fuel drained into the creek on Saturday morning from a train. He says there’s no effect on drinking water.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency says a railroad contractor was in Sidney on Monday doing cleanup work. The state EPA says a containment boom will be in place for several weeks to skim fuel from the top of the water.

Sidney is a village of about 1,200 residents in Champaign County.
