JACKSON, Mich. (AP) - Consumers Energy says it plans to eliminate 1 million cubic yards of landfill waste through the end of 2019.

The CMS Energy Corp. unit says it’s doubling the amount of waste it pulls out of the landfill stream through increased recycling and other measures.

The Jackson-based utility provides electrical and natural gas service to 6.6 million of Michigan’s 9.9 million residents.

Consumers Energy says it began a waste minimization program in 1992 and has recycled at least 700,000 cubic yards of material since then.

The utility says it’s saved at least $14 million in landfill costs since then.
