CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - A Corpus Christi police officer who’s been with the department 25 years has been named interim chief after a motorcycle crash killed Chief Floyd Simpson.

Assistant Chief Mike Markle takes over for Simpson, who died Sunday following an off-duty traffic accident in Port Aransas (uh-RAN’-suhs).

A Corpus Christi police statement Monday says Markle was in charge of the operations department since 2012.

Simpson’s death has been ruled an accident. Preliminary autopsy results show he died of blunt-force trauma. Police say Simpson wore a helmet but it came off when he put down his motorcycle while trying to avoid another vehicle.

Services are pending.
