PENN HILLS, Pa. (AP) - Fire crews had to dodge ammunition that was going off when they responded to a house fire near Pittsburgh.
Penn Hills Fire Chief John Capone says the fire causes the ammunition to ignite, which made it dangerous for crews who responded to the blaze about 8:10 p.m. Monday.
Two people who live in a basement apartment were alerted by a passerby and escaped, while another man driving past the house stopped, kicked in a door, and helped a dog and two cats escape, too.
Crews were still trying to determine the cause of the blaze which killed a litter of kittens.
Residents of the upstairs unit weren’t home when the fire started.
The roof collapsed and the home is a total loss. A fire marshal continued to investigate Tuesday.
