Police say Smith assaulted a woman with a knife in May 2014 and bit a Fort Dodge police detective while being questioned following the attack.

At his sentencing hearing, Smith apologized for his actions last year. A judge said he was “simply appalled” by his behavior.

Smith must serve five years before he is eligible for parole.
