GILROY, Calif. (AP) - A 13-year-old girl is recovering after police say she shot herself in the leg with a gun belonging to her stepfather, who is a police officer.
KTVU-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1bZArco ) that a Gilroy Police spokesman confirms that the teenager is the stepdaughter of a Gilroy officer. A preliminary investigation shows she accidentally shot herself with his personal weapon on Monday afternoon.
Gilroy Police and Fire personnel gave the girl first aid and took her to a trauma center. Investigators say she is in stable condition.
The officer could face charges if investigators find that his gun was not properly stored.
The department is investigating the circumstances of the shooting and has launched an internal review.
