PHOENIX (AP) - A federal judge is brushing away Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s objections to the judge’s questioning Arpaio about a secret investigation into the judge’s wife.
An Arpaio attorney said in a April 29 court filing that U.S. District Murray Snow should have given Arpaio advance notice so Arpaio could have prepared answers for Snow’s questions.
Snow rejected that contention, saying in an order Monday he has authority to question witnesses and a duty to clarify evidence and ensure that all relevant facts are brought out.
Arpaio testified April 23 during a contempt of court hearing in a racial profiling case that he believed his then-attorney had hired a private investigator to investigate Snow’s wife for purportedly making a comment about the judge not wanting the sheriff to get re-elected in 2012.
