NEW HAMPTON, Iowa (AP) - A jury has acquitted the former mayor of Oelwein (OHL’-weyne) of one sexual abuse charge, but couldn’t reach a verdict on a second.

Jurors twice informed the court Tuesday that they are deadlocked on a second-degree sexual abuse charge against 37-year-old Jason Manus, prompting a judge to declare a mistrial on that count. He is accused of sexually abusing a girl when she was 6 to 9 years old.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1ABMXoE ) Manus was found not guilty of third-degree sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl.

The case went to the jury on Monday following closing arguments.

Assistant Attorney General Denise Timmins told jurors that Manus wasn’t telling the truth during his trial, while defense attorney Jeremy Thompson argued varied stories relayed by the girls proves nothing happened.
