VAN BUREN, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say the fire that killed a toddler in upstate New York over the weekend was caused by food left on the stove.

Fire officials said Monday the fire started in the kitchen and quickly spread to the second floor of the house.

Police say 2-year-old Nora Lamirande died in the Sunday afternoon blaze. She was napping upstairs when the fire started at the Van Buren home.

Police say the toddler’s mother was outside at the time. Several neighbors used garden hoses to try to knock down the flames and some tried to rescue the girl.

Firefighters pulled the girl from the home. But she was pronounced dead at a hospital.
