TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - A northern Michigan police officer faces trial for misdemeanor neglect of duty in connection with an incident at a city official’s home.
No plea deal was reached Tuesday during a pre-trial hearing in 86th District Court for Traverse City police Capt. Mike Ayling. No trial date was set.
Police were called Feb. 16 to the home of then-Traverse City Manager Jered Ottenwess after his mother reported he had been drinking for four days and “ripping up our house.”
The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports that sheriff’s investigators determined city police initially didn’t write reports, follow up on evidence, or pursue a domestic assault case.
Ottenwess later resigned and received probation for misdemeanor domestic violence and attempted assault charges.
The Associated Press left a message Tuesday seeking comment from Ayling’s attorney.
