PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s gas tax is increasing by one cent due to inflation.
The Rhode Island Division of Taxation announced Tuesday that the tax would rise to 33 cents a gallon on July 1. It currently stands at 32 cents a gallon.
The General Assembly passed legislation last year requiring that the tax be adjusted every two years based on inflation.
Tax Administrator David Sullivan says this is the first time the tax has been adjusted due to inflation.
He says the tax will be reviewed again and possibly adjusted for inflation in 2017.
The adjustment applies only to the state excise tax. It doesn’t apply to the one cent Rhode Island environmental protection regulatory fee or to the 18.4 cent federal excise tax.
