TAHOKA, Texas (AP) - A West Texas school district has called off classes for the day after more than 9 inches of rain left behind flooded roads.
The Tahoka (tuh-HOK’-kuh) Independent School District canceled classes Tuesday. Superintendent George McFarland cited unsafe travel conditions.
The Texas Department of Transportation reports some roads closures south of Lubbock due to flooding, in areas near Tahoka and Lamesa (luh-MEE’-suh).
National Weather Service forecaster Victor Murphy says Tahoka had received 9.1 inches of rain in the 24-hour period ending Tuesday morning.
Forecasters say Lubbock set a precipitation record Monday with 3.42 inches of rain. The previous record for May 4 was set in 2001, when Lubbock received .82 inches of rain.
The National Weather Service says showers that began Monday in West Texas should ease off by Wednesday.
