Billionaire businessman and 2016 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said Wednesday that 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney “choked like a dog” and that the former Massachusetts governor failed to energize the Republican base in the last presidential cycle.

“If you look at Romney, now Romney choked, OK? He choked like a dog,” Mr. Trump said from New Hampshire on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “He should have won that. That was an election that should have been won.”

“He choked. But frankly, had he energized the base, because the base didn’t go out and vote — you understand that,” Mr. Trump said. “Which is shocking, because they’re not fans of Obama … had they gone out and voted, the people that sat back and didn’t get up and vote, which is hard to believe, he would have won the election.”
