Democrat presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is as “hawkish as Hillary Clinton is,” said actor Viggo Mortensen, most famous for his role as Aragorn in Lord of the Rings.
In a recent interview with Democracy Now, the actor criticized Sanders’ “warlike stance” as indistinguishable from Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton or the Republicans.
Mortensen supports Sanders, but he pointed out that the self-described socialist Senator is “in many ways, as hawkish as Hillary Clinton is.”
While the independent Vermont Senator has frequently cast himself as the anti-war candidate, he favored bombing the Baltic in 1999, supports Obama’s drone program and has voted in favor of several funding bills for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Sanders is “a person who, as a senator, has voted for every military appropriation, has voted for every, you know, resolution, pro-Israel government resolution, without question,” Mortensen told Democracy Now. “For all the good things he does, he’s also very hawkish and not really different than Hillary Clinton in that regard, or any of the Republicans.”
Neither the Democrat nor Republican candidates will talk with “any profundity” about the events that led to war with Iraq in 2003, Mortensen said. The consequences of that decision, which Mortensen vigorously opposed at the time, are “not going to be a topic of conversation, really” in the presidential race, he added.
While Sanders’ “warlike stance” is troubling, said Mortensen, it won’t “be talked about, any more than what really happened in Iraq and what it means today.”
